Deductions and rules

Do I need to file taxes in multiple states?

Short answer

You usually need to file in every state where you earn income or your business has nexus, meaning a strong enough connection like employees, property, or significant sales. Most people file one resident return plus a nonresident return for each other state, then claim credits so the same income is not taxed twice.
