Deadlines and filing

Does a tax extension give you more time to pay?

Short answer

No, a tax extension gives more time to file, not to pay. Form 4868 or Form 7004 moves the filing deadline back six months, but any tax owed is still due on the original date. Interest and late-payment penalties start from that original deadline on any balance you have not paid.
