Hiring a bookkeeper

Do small businesses need a bookkeeper?

Short answer

Most small businesses need a bookkeeper once they have regular monthly transactions, employees, sales tax, or a loan. Very small side businesses can manage with software alone. The real test is time: if bookkeeping takes more than a few hours a month or is always behind, a bookkeeper usually pays for itself.
